기쁨과 슬픔

Then a woman said, “Speak to us of Joy and Sorrow.”
그러자 어떤 여인이 말했다. " 기쁨과 슬픔에 대해 말해주십시오."

And he answered:
그러자 그는 대답했다.

Your joy is your sorrow unmasked.
당신의 기쁨은 당신의 슬픔이 가면을 벗은 것입니다.

And the selfsame well from which your laughter rises was oftentimes filled with your tears.
그리고 당신의 웃음이 솟아나는 그 우물은 종종 당신의 눈물로 채워집니다.

And how else can it be?
어떻게 그렇지 않을 수 있겠어요?

The deeper that sorrow carves into your being, the more joy you can contain.
슬픔이 당신이라는 존재를 더 깊이 깍아낼 수록, 당신은 거기에 기쁨을 더 많이 담을 수 있습니다.

Is not the cup that hold your wine the very cup that was burned in the potter's oven?
와인을 담은 당신의 컵은 도공의 가마니에서 구워진 바로 그 컵이 아닙니까.

And is not the lute that soothes your spirit, the very wood that was hollowed with knives?
그리고 당신의 영혼을 위로하는 류트는, 나무를 칼로 긁어내어 텅비게 만든 것 아니던가요?

When you are joyous, look deep into your heart and you shall find it is only that which has given you sorrow that is giving you joy.
당신이 기쁨에 가득차 있을때 당신의 마음을 깊이 들여다보세요. 그러면  (지난날 당신이 겪은) 슬픔이 당신에게  기쁨을 주고 있다는 것을 알게 됩니다.
When you are sorrowful look again in your heart, and you shall see that in truth you are weeping for that which has been your delight.

슬플때도 마음을 들여다 보세요.  그러면 그 순간 이전에 당신이 기쁜 상태로 지내왔기에 (그렇지 않은) 지금 울고 있다는 것을 알아차리게 됩니다.

Some of you say, “Joy is greater than sorrow,” and others say, “Nay, sorrow is the greater.”

누군가는 "기쁨이 슬픔보다 위대해." 라고 말하고 누군가는 "아이, 슬픔이 더 위대해."라고 말합니다.

But I say unto you, they are inseparable.
하지만 저는 그 둘은 분리되지 않은 것(하나)라고 생각합니다.

Together they come, and when one sits alone with you at your board, remember that the other is asleep upon your bed.
그 둘은 항상 같이 다니고, 하나가 식탁에서 당신 옆에 앉는다면, 나머지 하나는 지금 당신의 침대에서 잠들어 있는 것이라는 걸 기억하세요.

Verily you are suspended like scales between your sorrow and your joy.

진실로 당신은 슬픔과 기쁨 사이에 매달려 있는 저울과 같습니다.

Only when you are empty are you at standstill and balanced.
당신이 빈 상태여야만이  당신은 고요한 상태가 될 것이고 , 균형을 잡을 수 있을겁니다.

When the treasure-keeper lifts you to weigh his gold and his silver,
needs must your joy or your sorrow rise or fall. 
그리하여 하늘의 보물을 지키는 사람이 자신의 금과 은의 무게를 재려고 당신을 들어올릴 때, 
당신의 기쁨과 슬픔 또한 오르내리지 않을 수 없는 것임을..
