인생은 길다. 그 사실을 깨달아가고 있다. 젊어서 죽으면 인생은 그리 길지 않다. 하지만 요절하지 않으면 다 자란 후에도 추가로남은 몇십 년에 대해 생각해야 하는 묘한 상황에 처하게 된다.
50년, 60년 어쩌면 70년 정도 남은 시간을 살아내야 하는 것이다. 형이 죽고 나서 나는 어찌어찌 메트로 오는 길을 찾게 됐다.
그리고 성년이라는 것이 그 자체로 여정이라기보다는 그동안 추구하던 성장과 변화를 마무리 짓는 최종 목적지 같은 시기라 생각하는 쪽이 편했다. 형보다 더 나이 든 사람이 된 지금이 이상하고 부자연스럽다. 어릴 적 올라가서 놀던 나무보다 키가 더커지면 이런 느낌일까. 그러나 이제는 내 삶이 지금 보이는 지평선 너머까지 뻗을 것이라는 사실을 알 정도의 관록은 갖추게 되었다. 삶은 휘청거리고 삐걱거리면서 천천히 앞으로 나아갈 테고, 그 방향을 나 스스로 잡는 편이 낫다는 것도 알게 됐다. 다시말해 내 삶은 여러 개의 챕터로 되어 있고, 그 말은 현재의 챕터를 언제라도 끝낼 수 있는 가능성도 있다는 뜻이다.
13장. 삶은 우리를 내버려두지 않는다 As Much as I Can Carry

거의 완벽한 직장이었다. 하지만 어쩌면 이제 내가 필요로 하는 것은 더 이상 완벽한 직장이 아닐지도 몰랐다. 삶에서 가장 중요한 일은 이 전시실에서 벌어진다고 생각하던 한때가 있었고, 명상과 같은 고요함을 감사한 마음으로 음미했다. 그러나 요즘은 생각이 미술관 밖으로 휘리릭 날아가서 몸과 마음이 움찔거리고 안절부절못하기 일쑤다. 나는 이제 더 이상 고요하고 정돈된 환경을 필요로 하지 않는다. 이제 더 이상 경기장 밖에 서서 게임을 잠자코 지켜보지 않아도 된다.

P. 319 그(예수)를 중심으로 나머지 세상이 흔들리며 돌아가고 있는 듯하다. 우아하면서도 부서진 몸은 뻔한 사실을 다시 상기시킨다. 우리가 죽을 수밖에 없는 운명이라는 것, 고통 속의 용기는 아름답다는 것, 상실은 사랑과 탄식을 자극한다는 사실 말이다.
자신의 이상한 삶에 너무 익숙해져서 더 이상 그것을 이상하다고 느끼지 못하고, 후퇴나 양보에 익숙하지 않은 모습. 거울에 비친 내 얼굴을 보듯 그녀의 얼굴이똑똑히 보였다.
320 가끔은 지루하고 가끔은 숨 막히게 아름다운 일상. 아무리 중차대한 순간이라 하더라도 아무리 기저에 깔린 신비로움이 숭고하다 할지라도 복잡한 세상은 멈추지 않고 계속해서 돌아간다. 우리는 삶을 살아가야 하고, 삶은 우리를 내버려두지 않는다.
마지막으로 그림 하단이 있다. 그곳에서 그림의 톤은 다시 한번 변화한다. 거기에는 슬픔에 겨워 쓰러진 어머니를 돌보는 연민 가득한 사람들이 있다. 수동적인 구경꾼들과 달리 그들의 마음은 같은 방향, 즉 선행으로 향하고 있다. 그림의 이 마지막 부분은 따르고 싶은 모범이다
P. 320 내 앞에 펼쳐진 삶에서 나를 필요로 하고, 내가 필요한 경우들이 있을 것이다. 내가 할 수 있는 최선을 다하고, 다른 이들도 나를 위해 그렇게 해줄 것이라는 게 나의 희망이다. 이제 형은 세상에 없다. 나는 그 상실을 느낀다. 형은 그림에서 성모 마리아를 돌보기 위해 정신을 바짝 차린 채 몸을 굽히고 있는, 칭찬받아 마땅한 현실적인 사람들 중 하나일 것이다. 하지만 내 마음속에는 지금도 형의 초상화, 티치아노가 그린 듯한 밝고 솔직한 형의 얼굴이 선명하게 살아 있고, 그 모습에서 나는 위안을 찾는다. 이 그림이라면 확실히 내가 메트 바깥으로 품고 나갈 수 있을 것이다.
P. 324 미술관이 문을 닫을 시간이 가까워올 때까지도 나는 계단 맨 꼭대기의 내 자리에 서 있다. 저 아래 그레이트 홀은 소란스럽기그지없다. 사람들이 바다처럼 몰려가 맡겨뒀던 옷을 찾아 입고, 지도를 보고, 말로 표현할 수 없을 정도로 아름다운 세상을 떠나일상과 삶으로 돌아가는 수순을 밟고 있다.
많은 경우 예술은 우리가 세상이 그대로 멈춰 섰으면 하는 순간에서 비롯한다. 너무도 아름답거나, 진실되거나, 장엄하거나, 슬픈 나머지 삶을 계속하면서는 그냥 받아들일 수 없는 그런 순간 말이다. 예술가들은 그 덧없는 순간들을 기록해서 시간이 멈춘 것처럼 보이도록 한다. 그들은 우리로 하여금 어떤 것들은 덧없이 흘러가버리지 않고 세대를 거듭하도록 계속 아름답고, 진실되고, 장엄하고, 슬프고 기쁜 것으로 남아 있을 수 있다고 믿게 해준다. 그리고 이곳 메트에 유화물감으로 그려지고, 대리석에 새겨지고, 퀼트로 바느질된 그 증거물들이 있다.
세상이 이토록 형형색색으로 화려하고 충만하며, 그런 세상이 존재하지 않는 것이 아니라 존재하며, 사람들이 아름다운 것들을 정성을 다해 만들려는 본성을 가지고 태어났다는 사실이신비롭다. 예술은 평범한 것과 신비로움 양쪽 모두에 관한 것이어서 우리에게 뻔한 것들, 간과하고 지나간 것들을 돌아보도록일깨워준다. 예술이 있는 곳에서 보낼 수 있었던 모든 시간에 고마운 마음이다. 나는 다시 이곳에 돌아올 것이다.
10년 전, 배치된 구역에 처음 섰을 때 내가 이해하지 못했던것들이 있었다. 때때로 삶은 단순함과 정적만으로 이루어져 있을 때도 있다. 빛을 발하는 예술품들 사이에서 방심하지 않고 모든 것을 살피는 경비원의 삶처럼 말이다. 그러나 삶은 군말 없이살아가면서 고군분투하고, 성장하고, 새로운 것을 창조해내는 것이기도 하다.
5시 30분이 되자 나는 클럽으로 부착하는 해진 넥타이를 떼고서 중앙 계단을 뛰어 내려간다.
